(Courtenay July 6, 2010) – What if the simple act of changing the way you spend $10 could help the environment and support local job creation asks Sue Moen, project coordinator for 350Comox Valley.
By shifting just $10 a week to local sustainable food, you can make a real difference for healthier communities and good food for tomorrow.
“What we’re seeing repeatedly in the Comox Valley, are people wanting to make a difference – looking to support local food and the environment – and seeking ways to take action” says Moen. Scientists say that 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity. World Community proudly announces the next Comox Valley greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction initiative – 350ComoxValley.

They are seeking 5,000 Comox Valley residents to take a pledge to shift $10 per week of their grocery budget from imported to local sustainable food. This will reduce GHG’s the equivalent of taking nearly 500 cars off the roads for a year and create 50 new local jobs. The project is in response to the global 10:10:10 Work Party project of 350.org where over 1,000 groups have registered events to demonstrate to leaders we want action on climate change.

Vancouver Island MusicFest joined the project in a big way. Meaghan Cursons, Associate Producer says MusicFest has exceeded the goals of 350.org already – reducing festival-related carbon emissions substantially more than 10% – and is thrilled to offer festival goers the opportunity to take the pledge and participate in 350 Comox Valley on-site.
Other local initiatives such as The 30 Day Local Food Challenge and businesses such as Brambles Market are on board to spread the word and help people implement their pledges. World Community welcomes other partners.
